Case Study: GST Handset Tracking deployed during Democratic National Convention

Solution in Action: Customer Case Study (September 2008) —

Situation

For the 2008 Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Denver Colorado, Denver PD knew there were many challenges in making sure the public is protected and also to prevent any major incidents from happening. With national and international media staged in Denver, the eyes of the world were on the city of Denver. Denver PD asked GST and Sprint to assist with technology that would help them in this situation.

Challenge

Denver PD told GST that one of their main objectives was to have real-time situational awareness from the Command Post (CP) of where their officers were located during any incident. Another objective was to obtain real-time intelligence from the officers on the ground. Preventing bad things from happening with real-time intelligence using technology was of utmost importance.

Solution

GST and Sprint recommended the Sprint Blackberry 8330 with GST Optima. Denver PD was able to have One Common Operating Picture from multiple locations including the Command Post (CP). Denver PD was able to log on to GST Optima from any browser and locate any officer(s) carrying the Sprint Blackberry 8330 in real-time. On multiple occasions during the DNC, Denver PD was able to assist officers in need of assistance by logging onto GST Optima and informing assisting units the location of the officers. With the Sprint Blackberry 8330, using the camera for pictures and video was very helpful. Denver PD told GST and Sprint that on a scale of one to ten (ten being the best), they rate GST Optima a ten.

Results

Denver PD informed GST and Sprint during the post DNC briefing that they were very pleased with GST Optima and the Sprint Blackberry 8330. Denver PD continued to use GST Optima during the Columbus Day parade in October 2008. They are working on deploying the units with GST Optima for everyday use in 2009.
