City of Santa Ana enhances operation capabilities of Police Department with advanced mobile mapping technology

Santa Ana, California (May 2009) — City of Santa Ana contracted GST to install GPS modems with high-speed wireless communication on all police patrol units, code enforcement vehicles, and motor units. GST has also successfully deployed GST Tracker vehicle tracking system and GST Mapper mobile mapping software to support mission-critical operations.

The advanced system provides real-time situational awareness for dispatchers in the dispatch center, patrol officers in police units in the field using Mobile Data Computer (MDC), and incident commanders in mobile command posts. The live interface between GST Tracker and Police Department’s Computer Aided Dispatch system (CAD) enables dispatchers to view all the active vehicles and current incidents throughout the city on the same map on GST Viewer workstation. In the vehicle, each officer may see the current location of his/her unit on the map, the location of the incident that the officer is assigned to, and the location of sister units when such information is needed.

In most cases, officers are familiar with city streets and know how to get to any incident location quickly. When traffic conditions make the normal routes difficult, or when incidents occurred at locations that the officer is not familiar with, an optional feature implemented on GST Mapper software in the patrol unit enables the officer to activate the Dynamic Routing function to generate the fastest route to the incident.

The mobile mapping technology that Santa Ana deployed not only provides officers with an additional layer of safety protection, but also enhances the efficiency and effectiveness of police operations significantly.
