PRESS RELEASES
Los Angeles County Fire Department using state-of-the art mapping and tracking system
Santa Ana, California (July 2009) —
One of the nation’s largest Fire Departments, Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD), contracted GST to set up a state-of-art-mapping and tracking system using GST Tracker and GST Viewer. LACoFD also contracted GST to install GPS modems with high-speed wireless communication for 800 plus units in 170 stations throughout Los Angeles County. GST has successfully installed the GPS modems for all the vehicles in 170 stations and deployed GST Tracker and GST Viewer to support LACoFD’s daily operations.
The GST system provides real-time situational awareness for dispatchers in the dispatch center. The live interface between GST Tracker and LACoFD’s Computer Aided Dispatch system (CAD) enables dispatchers to view all the active vehicles and current incidents throughout the county on the same map on GST Viewer workstation. GST will also be deploying GST Mapper MDC in each of the Battalion Chief’s vehicles where the each Battalion Chief may see the current location of his/her unit on the map, the location of the assigned incident, and the location of other units when such information is needed. GST Mapper MDC will include the GIS Data from the LACoFD’s GIS department and all other data pertinent to LACoFD’s daily operations including aerial layer, image layer, floor plans, run-cards, parcel maps, etc. A national map is also integrated with the LACoFD’s GIS data in that whenever any vehicles are outside the county, the national map will be able to show units from California to New York.
In most cases, firefighters are familiar with local streets and know how to get to any incident location quickly. When traffic conditions make the normal routes difficult, or when incidents occurred at locations that the firefighter is not familiar with, an optional feature implemented on GST Mapper MDC software in the vehicle enables the firefighter to activate the Dynamic Routing function to generate the fastest route to the incident.
This state-of-the-art mapping and tracking technology that LACoFD deployed provides protection and additional safety for its personnel and also adds to efficiency in daily operations.
